Check in from time to time to read what the Boondoggle Boys have been cookin’ up.

Q’chen - 4/7/09

The Boonhaugler has been replaced with the purchase of the Q’chen. The Q’chen is a 24’ Haulmark cargo trailer with A/C. It’s work in progress, but when complete it will be a licensed mobile kitchen. Here’s a couple pictures of the interior now that it’s ready usable

New Tow Rig - 8/7/08

Last July Bob traded in his Dakota for a Ram 2500. Now the Boondoggle Brothers are just dreaming of a new toy hauler to replace the Boonhaugler.

2008 Competition Update - 8/7/08

I realized our Competition page doesn’t tell the whole story, just the overall place and if we received a top 10.

The 2008 season started off with a bang for us in Warsaw with 3 top 10’s and earning Reserve Grand Champion. After not hearing our name in the chicken category, we received our first 1st place ever in ribs. Then moments later received our second 1st place in pork. This was especially enjoyable since Don cooks the ribs and Bob cooks the pork. Warsaw only called the top 5, so we didn’t know we finished 6th in brisket until we received our official scoring sheet. But we knew the chicken and brisket scores must have been good since we heard our team called a 3rd time when they announced Reserve Grand Champion. Even though the A/C wasn’t working well in the truck that day, the drive home seemed very short and was enjoyable. (PS - chicken just missed a top 10, finishing 11th place)

Our second competition of the year was in State Center Iowa, what must be the unofficial home of the railroad track. I believe a train went by every 20 minutes. After a great start to the year, we did not follow it up with a good showing at State Center. We received one call in pork, but also scored dead last with chicken. And the chicken deserved it as it was not cooked very well, in fact it was downright awful and we knew it. Ribs finished 13th just missing a call.

In July we headed to LaPorte City, a town we lived in from ‘79-85 and where one of our sister’s still lives - so it was great to see family and friends. And based on the 3 calls, I don’t think we disappointed our fans. This was our first call in chicken and hearing that call, we felt it would be a good day. The pork score was our highest ever (172.something) and brisket also earned a trip to see the stage. It was a great feeling being able to walk up to get some awards with all the cheers from the crowd.

And our latest competition to date was in Waucoma, where our mom’s family has lived since the early 40s. We still have a bitter taste in our mouths from this comp, but not from the quality of meat we cooked. We made the largest cardinal sin - we were 40 seconds late to get the brisket to the turn in table. No excuses, just lost track of time. If we would have earned an average score in the brisket category we would have finished 9th overall. And we believe the briskets we cooked that day were the best ones of the year. So even though we finished 8th in ribs and 6th in pork, our overall score suffered from not having a brisket score and we finished last. Our next purchase will be an atomic clock, and we will have it before our next comp in Blue Springs.
